Korea’s coffee market reaches record high

Korea’s domestic coffee market reached a record high in 2017 of 11.7 trillion won (about 26.5 billion cups) as the demand for brew coffee continues to rise, according to the Korea Customs Service.

The country’s coffee market grew by more than threefold from three trillion won a decade earlier.  Coffee mixes ranked no. 1 with over 13 billion cups followed by fresh roasted coffee with 4.8 billion cups.  Canned coffee and various coffee-flavored drinks are also sold in the market.

Starbucks and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf changed the coffee market of the country as the market was saturated with coffee mixes and instant coffee before.  Aside from the growth of international coffee chains, local shops are becoming more high-end to meet the diversified demands of the consumers.
