IN 2023, PHILIPPINE AGRICULTURE experienced a modest growth of 1.2 percent, while the industry and services sectors performed significantly better, with growth rates of 3.6 percent and 7.1 percent, respectively. The low performance highlights the persistent challenges faced by the agriculture sector, including low productivity, the impacts of climate change, and the pressing need for modernization.
The paper will discuss agriculture scenarios for 2024-2025 and explore emerging roles and growth opportunities within the sector. It will be divided into four sections: role of food and agriculture in today’s issues, sector performance (agriculture, forestry and fishery) in 2024, growth outlook in 2025, and emerging roles and growth areas in the sector.
Note: Paper presented at the UA&P-CFA Year-end Food and Agribusiness E-Conference with the theme “Empowering the Next Generation: Emerging Roles and Growth in Philippine Food and Agribusiness,” December 5, 2024 via Zoom.
