THE BEEF CATTLE INDUSTRY IN THE PHILIPPINES is crucial not only because of the growing demand for meat, but also for its wider roles in providing dairy, draft power, livelihoods for smallholders, and productive use of marginal and grassland areas. Raising cattle for beef presents a promising avenue for farmers and investors, given the challenges faced by other livestock sectors, particularly swine. While the industry is dominated by backyard farmers, there is an opportunity for both smallholder and larger enterprises. Food derived from cattle is a quality source of protein.

Cattle raising is most common in the Ilocos Region, Central Visayas, and CALABARZON regions, where cattle inventories are highest. The country is moderately favorable when it comes to the absence of disease and the presence of veterinary support. Despite these, the domestic supply of beef remains unable to supply demand and is currently being compensated by imports, according to the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI).
