Push to increase longan exports

Summarized by Joy Kristel L. Orzales

The Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced its plan to expand the country’s longan exports to new markets. The ministry is currently working on export requirements such as sanitary and phytosanitary requirements to reach countries with strict policies.

Cambodia yields about 20,000 tons of longan annually from more than 8,800 hectares, according to the ministry. Only two provinces export the fruit to other countries. With increased demand, other provinces can increase their production and farmers will expand their farms. Some farmers are already shifting to other fruits such as mango because of bigger market.
