“Large-scale agriculture is expanding. But small farms with less than 20 hectares of land should be supported as they produce more diverse and nutritious food, said researchers at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia.
Big farms of more than 50 hectares dominate food production in Europe, Americas, Australia and New Zealand, producing more than three quarters of the cereals, livestock and fruit in those regions. IIn most of Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, small farms produce about 75 per cent of the food, the CSIRO study said.
The world’s food production will need to increase by 70 per cent by 2050, the study said, with the global population forecast to rise to 9.7 billion by then.”
