Half-Cup Rice Act of 2018, in the works

Davao Oriental Rep. Joel Mayo proposed the “Half-Cup Rice Act of 2018”, or the House Bill No. 7034.

The bill is in response to the current dwindling rice supply of the country. It aims to achieve the reduction of food wastage, attain self-sufficiency in rice production, lessen consumer expenses and promote health with balanced eating.

The same concept was introduced years ago by fast food establishments when the country was also facing problems with its rice supply. The only difference with its reintroduction is that the half-cup of rice will be 50 percent cheaper than the full-cup order.

According to a study from the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rice Research Institute, each Filipino is wasting an average of two tablespoons of rice each day.
