MILK AND OTHER DAIRY PRODUCTS are considered an important addition to the diet and nourishment of children and adults. They contain essential macronutrients like carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, as well as micronutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin B12, calcium, and magnesium. Milk and its derivatives, like butter, cheese, and cream, are also important culinary ingredients used in many dishes and products.
In the Philippines, the dairy industry is very small, with local production contributing only one percent to the net dairy supply of the country and 0.1 percent to the value of production of the entire agriculture sector.
The commonly used livestock for dairy production are cattle, carabao (water buffalo), and goats. Although only 32.2 percent of the Philippines’ dairy herds are cattle, 62 percent of the country’s milk production comes from cows, which makes them the primary dairy livestock.
